How to Prepare Your Junk Car for Pickup

A practical junk car pickup checklist: remove personal items, confirm paperwork, describe access, and agree on payment and collection details.

Start with the details the buyer needs

Preparing a junk car for pickup is mostly about avoiding surprises. Before arranging collection, write down the year, make, model, location, and whether the vehicle starts. Explain any missing wheels, locked steering, flat tires, collision damage, or access restrictions. A car parked on a clear driveway presents a different loading situation from one inside a low garage or behind another vehicle.

Send recent photographs if the buyer requests them. Include the whole vehicle and any damage or missing parts you have described. Accurate information helps the operator plan the equipment and lets you discuss an offer based on the vehicle that will actually be collected.

Remove belongings before collection day

Check the glove compartment, center console, door pockets, trunk, and spaces beneath the seats. Look for insurance papers, parking passes, keys, chargers, medication, and personal documents. Remove removable toll tags and any personal devices. If the car has a connected infotainment system, consult its instructions for removing your accounts and saved information when it is safe and practical to do so.

Do not remove vehicle components after agreeing to an offer without telling the buyer. An offer for a complete car may change if equipment or parts are missing at pickup.

Confirm paperwork and payment

Ask what ownership documents and identification are needed before the truck is dispatched. Explain missing documents or any ownership issue early; a pickup appointment does not resolve a title problem. For a Pennsylvania vehicle, check the current requirements with an authorized PennDOT agent rather than assuming every sale follows the same process.

Confirm the agreed offer, whether collection charges apply, how payment will be made, and when you should expect it. Keep the buyer's contact information and a record of the agreed terms. Do not rely on a vague promise that details will be sorted out later.

Make the pickup location easy to identify

Give the street address, the exact parking location, and any gate or building instructions. Tell the operator about narrow entrances, steep slopes, low ceilings, or other parked vehicles. Arrange access with the property owner where necessary. Do not push a disabled car into the road or attempt loading it yourself.

Keep your phone available around the appointment. If access or the car's condition changes, contact the operator before arrival. Confirm who needs to be present and who can authorize release of the vehicle.

Before the vehicle leaves

Check that your belongings are out, the agreed paperwork is complete, and you understand the payment arrangements. Keep your transaction records. Ask the appropriate state authority or your insurance provider about any follow-up steps relevant to registration and coverage.

A prepared pickup does not require expensive detailing or repairing a car just to make it look better. Clear information, accessible parking, and confirmed documents matter more.
