How to Prepare a Vehicle for Long-Distance Towing

Plan a long-distance tow with a clear destination, vehicle details, condition photos, access instructions, and an agreed collection and delivery process.

Confirm the route and destination first

A long-distance tow needs more planning than moving a vehicle a few streets. Before booking, confirm the pickup address and the complete delivery address, including the receiving person's name, phone number, opening hours, and access instructions. A repair shop may need to authorize an after-hours drop-off or provide a specific unloading area.

Ask whether the operator can handle the proposed route and vehicle. Discuss the collection window and delivery expectations without treating an estimate as a guaranteed arrival time. Traffic, weather, and access can affect a journey.

Give the operator the vehicle specifications

Provide the make, model, year, and current condition. Mention all-wheel drive, four-wheel drive, modifications, unusually low clearance, damage, missing wheels, or a vehicle that will not roll or steer. If it is electric or hybrid, identify it clearly.

The appropriate transport method depends on the vehicle and its condition. Consult the owner's manual and let a qualified operator determine suitable equipment and loading arrangements. Do not assume that every vehicle can be moved using the same method.

Prepare the cabin and document condition

Take out valuables, loose belongings, documents, and personal devices. Ask whether any items may remain in the vehicle; do not assume it can be packed like a moving container. Keep keys available and confirm how they will be handed over and returned.

When it is safe to do so, take clear photographs of the exterior before collection. Note existing marks or damage and discuss them with the operator. Keep a copy of the collection paperwork and contact details so that any delivery question has a clear reference.

Agree on the full arrangements

Ask for the quoted charge and what it includes. Clarify whether tolls, additional waiting, difficult loading, storage, or changed delivery instructions could affect the final cost. Confirm the payment method and timing before accepting the booking.

Ask about the provider's applicable coverage and the process for reporting a concern. Get the answer directly from the operator rather than assuming a particular level of protection. Also arrange your own passenger travel; vehicle transport does not automatically include seats for everyone travelling with the car.

Coordinate the handover at both ends

Keep the pickup and receiving contacts reachable. Notify the operator promptly if a gate code, opening time, or destination changes. At delivery, have the receiving person check the vehicle and paperwork, and raise any concern through the agreed process.

For a vehicle that is being sold rather than delivered for continued use, also confirm the ownership and payment arrangements. The preparation steps overlap, but a sale and a towing booking are different transactions.
